Back in February Benjamin Cook released 'Girls on YouTube' where he and a few others, including myself, discussed the relative lack of popular female YouTubers. This video sparked off a heated conversation all across the web about sexism, feminism, misogyny and more; a conversation I was very quick to weigh in on… and express how little I truly knew. Since then I’ve been on a mission to not only understand these complex issues but actually make a positive difference in the world. As I said back in May:
"I hope that striving to prevent further acts of intentional and unintentional bigotry, hatred and ignorance will count a lot more than a few “sorry”s.”
So! It’s with great relief that I present to you “The Sex Talk”, the cornerstone and starting point in Project: Make The World Less Bad and Stuff [working title]. I figure if I’m actually going to make a change then it’d be best to start with “sex” as a whole. When I look at my audience with the understanding that roughly 1 in 3 of my female subscribers will experience some sort of sexual abuse in my lifetimes and then notice that roughly 1,800,000 young males are following my work I have to wonder… How many of my “fans” will grow up to be either a rapist or worse, a rape victim? If this video can go on to prevent just one instance of rape, bullying or self-loathing then… Fuck yeah!
Over the next year I hope to tackle a few other big topics such as sexism, homophobia and even handling bigotry; it’s all well and good to preach to the choir about how “bad things are bad” but without the right approach we can just come off as preachy, morally superior, assholes. Lord knows it wasn’t until a few folk took the time to sit me down and calmly explain why I was an ignorant douchebag that I actually began to understand what I was doing so very wrong.
So again, thanks for sticking with me through this journey and helping me strive to be a better person. I hope I can pass some of that positive energy on to you and my larger, less informed audience. I’d also like to say a huge thanks to every one of you who sent in suggestions and criticisms regarding the script; I read every one and did my best adapt the script accordingly.
